University Interfaith Council
at the University of Texas
Code of Ethics
As members of the University Interfaith Council (UIC) at the University of Texas (UT), we agree to abide by the following code of ethics as a requirement for membership. Therefore, we commit ourselves to a collegial relationship of mutual respect and tolerance and we uphold the right of all people to worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience.
A. We affirm the right of religious groups to speak freely about their beliefs and faith.
B. In order to respect the values of all people regardless of religious background, we affirm the right of every person to retain his/her belief system, to privacy, to be left alone, to survey other belief options, and to make their own decisions in freedom and without judgment.
C. In order to foster an atmosphere of religious tolerance and understanding within the University of Texas community, we disavow behaviors that seek to promote one religion by demeaning another.
D. In order to defend the human dignity and freedom of all people, we disagree with coercive techniques or manipulative appeals intended to bypass one's right to critical thinking.
E. In order to express both unity and diversity among our religious communities, we commit ourselves to work, when ever possible, with other religious groups within the UT community to serve the needs of all students, faculty administrators and staff.
F. In order to promote openness and honesty among religious groups, we commit ourselves to state clearly on all printed material and advertisements the names of all sponsoring groups of any religious activity we organize within the UT community.
G. In order to promote a relationship of mutual respect with UT for the benefit of the students served by both UIC and UT, we agree to respect the non-sectarian nature of the university, recognizing that it cannot promote any particular religious belief. We therefore agree to conduct our on-campus activities in accordance with the university policies.
H. UIC members or member groups cannot be required to participate in any program that would violate a principle or tenet of their faith. |
